This is Cash. He is a three year old pitbull currently residing at the Multnomah County Animal Shelter in Troutdale Oregon. Today a man came in and asked to see cash. I brought Cash out to visit with the man and was appalled with the way he spoke to me. He talked about using a choke lead to train him, and a mussel as an effective way of training him to not bite their cats, even though I tried to make it clear that we cannot send him home with someone with cats because he killed a cat and that is why he was in the shelter at all. I have shown dogs to people who have been overly controlling of the dog, and people who could not accurately read body language, but never have I been in a situation where a man explicitly told me about abusive training techniques that he planned on using on the dog. He looked and treated Cash as though he was a piece of meat to be utilized not a loving life companion. After I told the man that I could not continue the show for him, I took Cash back inside, asked a staff member to speak with the man, and then I walked into the back rooms and it took just about all of me to keep from crying. Everyone who works in that shelter agrees that Cash is one of the best dogs we have, he is sweet, gentle, and a true gentleman. When I put him back in his kennel I looked him in the eyes and promised that I would not let him go home with them, or anyone else who would not take care of him.
If you live in or around Multnomah County, please consider coming in and seeing Cash. He has been here for about a month now and I don’t want to see him go to someone who doesn’t deserve him.
The shelter is located at 1700 W Columbia River Hwy, Troutdale, OR 97060. Or online at http://www.multcopets.org/
